Malaquite Beach — 1554 Wreck Coin Strand

Lost Treasure TX • Kleberg County County
Description
North Padre Island beachcombing site near Padre Island National Seashore headquarters — Spanish reales and artifacts from the 1554 plate fleet still wash ashore along this strand, marking the northern end of the island's treasure coast.
Historical Notes
After three Spanish naos wrecked in April 1554 near today's Port Mansfield, bullion and personal fortunes spilled onto Gulf beaches. Centuries of storms have redistributed coins north along the barrier island. Texas Historical Commission beach surveys in 1969–1970 searched the shoreline for coin trails leading to offshore wreck sites. NPS asks visitors to report finds rather than remove artifacts. Coordinates mark the Malaquite Beach visitor area — representative of north-island wash-ups, not a single buried cache.
