Luling Oak Tree Outlaw Treasure Map

Lost Treasure TX • Caldwell County County
Description
Luling legend of Old West outlaws carving directions to buried stolen gold into an ancient oak on Bowie Street — folklore collected by local historian Riley Froh.
Historical Notes
From 1874 to 1876 Luling was the railhead of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway; Austin newspapers called it the "toughest town in Texas." Cattle, cotton, and oil wealth later transformed the San Marcos River town. Texas Co-op Power (August 2018) reports that historian Riley Froh described an ancient oak across from the Ainsworth House Inn where outlaws carved a map to buried gold. The carvings are no longer legible, but the legend persists. Coordinates mark downtown Luling on the San Marcos River, about 24 miles southeast of San Marcos Springs.
