Lost Spanish Gold of Lake Pepin

Lost Treasure MN • Goodhue County County
Description
Lake Pepin legend of eighteenth-century Spanish traders burying gold coins and bars along the rugged Mississippi lake shores before abandoning the cache.
Historical Notes
Spanish fur-trade influence extended into the upper Mississippi valley long before American settlement. Folklore describes traders burying gold near Lake Pepin's cliffs and forests when threatened or unable to transport the load. The tale predates Prohibition bootlegger caches in the same Wabasha–Goodhue lake corridor.
