Lost Soldier Mine

Description
Early 1870s legend of soldiers from Fort Tucson who found a waterhole lined with gold nuggets while pursuing Apache renegades, but were ordered onward. Deserters later died in the desert searching for it.
Historical Notes
While tracking Apache renegades, soldiers from Fort Tucson allegedly discovered a waterhole filled with gold nuggets. Their commander ordered them to continue the pursuit without stopping to prospect. Several men later went AWOL to find the hole; some were found dead of dehydration. The rich waterhole is said to lie between Maricopa Wells and Quijototoa in southern Arizona desert country.
