Description
Madison County Civil War legend of Union gold coins buried by rebel Jeremiah McCain on Keel Mountain near Gurley after a skirmish — his mule Bee allegedly died on the spot marking the cache.
Historical Notes
Local tradition holds that during a Civil War skirmish near Keel Mountain, Confederate sympathizer Jeremiah McCain seized a Union pay chest and buried gold coins on the mountain slope. His mule Bee is said to have collapsed and died at the burial site, fixing the location in oral history around Gurley in eastern Madison County. Keel Mountain rises above the Flint River valley northeast of Huntsville. Treasure hunters have searched the ridges for generations without confirmed finds.
