Sun shading (lidar)

Adjust simulated sun direction on the lidar hillshade. Azimuth = compass bearing of the light (0° north, 90° east). Altitude = height above the horizon (low = long shadows).

Lost Josephine Mine — Uinta Mountains

Lost Treasure UT • Summit County County
Description
Uinta Mountains legend of Spanish Jesuit priests working a rich gold and silver mine from 1650 to 1680, then sealing a vault of bullion in a hidden chamber when Ute hostility forced abandonment.
Historical Notes
Spanish documents reportedly describe two rivers and a peak near the mine; treasure hunters associate Weber River, Provo River, and Hoyt Peak with the site. Summit County resident Gary Holt claimed discovery in 2013 near Hoyt's Peak but produced fibrous calcite "goldcite" rather than Jesuit vault bullion. Forest Service archaeologists remain skeptical, yet the Josephine Mine remains among Utah's most repeated Spanish-mine treasure tales.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
