Lost Breyfogle Mine — Johnnie District

Lost Treasure NV • Nye County County
Description
Nevada desert lost-mine legend of Charles Breyfogle finding rich quartz after an Indian attack near Ash Meadows in 1863 — he searched northeast of Death Valley for twenty-six years without relocating the vein.
Historical Notes
Charles Breyfogle followed Confederate-bound travelers from Geneva, Nevada, into the Mojave before fleeing a night attack and discovering gold in quartz near a desert spring. Captured by Indians and later ransomed to a Mormon wagon train, he showed ore samples to the Yount family at Manse Spring and organized searches from Austin for decades. Many believe the find became the Johnnie Mine (1891); others insist the Breyfogle ledge remains unfound in the Pahrump Valley or Amargosa country.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
