Lost $125,000 Army Payroll — Dawson County

Lost Treasure NE • Dawson County County
Description
Central Platte legend of a $125,000 U.S. Army payroll lost or buried near the Fort Kearney–North Platte freight corridor in Dawson County — distinct from the smaller Fort Kearney soldier-cache tradition.
Historical Notes
Army pay wagons and stagecoaches moved specie along the Platte River road between Fort Kearney and western posts throughout the Indian Wars era. Holdups, flooded crossings, and hurried burials fed payroll-loss folklore across Buffalo, Dawson, and Lincoln counties. Jameson's Nebraska chapter singles out a $125,000 army payroll never accounted for — a larger figure than generic Fort Kearney cache tales. Dawson County's open Platte bottomlands and oxbow sloughs are among the suggested hiding countries. No quartermaster record confirms the loss; the story belongs to compiled Nebraska treasure guides. Coordinates approximate the central Platte valley in Dawson County between Lexington and Gothenburg.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
