Los Almagres Shafts — Packsaddle Southern Slopes

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Spanish Colonial and Anglo mine shafts on Packsaddle Mountain's southern slopes — fieldwork since the 1970s identified features that may include the historic Los Almagres diggings sought by Jim Bowie and later geologists.
Historical Notes
Bernardo de Miranda y Flores reached Cerro del Almagre and Los Almagres in 1756, opening the San José del Alcazar shaft and reporting iron-oxide rock he believed signaled silver ore. Herbert Bolton and later researchers retraced the route toward Honey Creek and Packsaddle Mountain. A 1970s rancher discovery led Christopher Caran's team to record shafts with side tunnels, a cable-haul fissure, a brick smelter, and modified caves on Packsaddle slopes. Gold occurs as trace byproduct in lead-silver prospects rather than as primary ore. Related entry "Oxford — Llano River Placer Gold" and treasure pins document separate Honey Creek/Riley Mountains traditions northeast of this ridge. Private Packsaddle Ranch land.
