Longhorn Cavern Treasure — Burnet

Lost Treasure TX • Burnet County County
Description
Longhorn Caverns near Burnet are tied to multiple treasure tales — Sam Bass outlaw hideout lore and a Woods Ranch cache supposedly buried near a foot-shaped ceiling formation ("dig under the footprint").
Historical Notes
Longhorn Cavern State Park preserves an 11-mile cave system. Sam Bass allegedly used the cavern after nearby robberies; the main entrance is called the Sam Bass entrance. No Bass loot has been found. Another tale involves treasure from Woods Ranch near Burnet. Hunters consulted a palmist told to dig "under the footprint" — a foot-shaped impression on a cavern ceiling. They dug below and found only a rust-lined hole where a metal container may once have rested. Cavern tours are available through Texas Parks & Wildlife; unauthorized digging is prohibited.
