Lockhart Chisholm Trail Courthouse Cache

Lost Treasure TX • Caldwell County County
Description
Lockhart legend of cattle-drive payrolls and Reconstruction-era strongboxes buried near the Caldwell County courthouse — the "Barbecue Capital of Texas" on the Chisholm Trail corridor.
Historical Notes
Lockhart became the Caldwell County seat in 1858 and developed as a cattle and cotton market on the road between San Marcos and Austin. The Chisholm Trail and later railroads moved Texas beef north through Caldwell County. Courthouse-square treasure tales describe merchants hiding gold when carpetbaggers, bandits, or drought threatened prairie towns. Lockhart's Victorian courthouse (1894) anchors the historic square. Coordinates mark downtown Lockhart. Related entry: "Luling Oak Tree Outlaw Treasure Map" downstream on the San Marcos River.
