Sun shading (lidar)

Adjust simulated sun direction on the lidar hillshade. Azimuth = compass bearing of the light (0° north, 90° east). Altitude = height above the horizon (low = long shadows).

Llano River — Packsaddle to Kingsland Reach

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Llano River gravel bars between Packsaddle Mountain and Kingsland. Fine placer gold flakes eroded from Llano Uplift bedrock concentrate in cracks and inside bends along this Kingsland topo reach.
Historical Notes
Packsaddle Mountain rises five miles southwest of Kingsland on U.S. Highway 71. The Llano River flows east-northeast from the mountain toward the Kingsland Slab and Lake LBJ, carrying fine placer gold from Precambrian granite and gneiss of the Llano Uplift. Related entries "Kingsland Slab — Llano County" and "Llano River — Kingsland Placer Gold" document the popular downstream panning access. This pin marks the upstream river corridor at the mountain's eastern base where tributaries including Moss Creek and Honey Creek feed additional sediment. Most bank frontage is private ranch land. Use Kingsland Slab TPWD leased access downstream or obtain landowner permission. Expect small flakes, not nuggets.
