Description
Llano River at the Highway 71 crossing below Packsaddle Mountain — public-road access to river gravels where fine placer gold accumulates in the shadow of the 1,628-foot twin-peaked ridge.
Historical Notes
The 1936 Texas Centennial marker for the Battle of Packsaddle Mountain stands on State Highway 71 at 30°36.662' N, 98°31.084' W, two and one half miles west of the summit fight site. The Llano River flows through the gap country visible from the marker pullout. Visit Llano and Highland Lakes guides list free recreational gold panning on Llano River gravels throughout the county. This crossing marks the river at the mountain's highway base five miles southwest of Kingsland. Park safely off Highway 71; respect private shoreline beyond the road right-of-way. Check USGS gage 08151500 (Llano) for wading conditions.
