Little Cypress Creek Mexican Gold — Upshur County

Lost Treasure TX • Upshur County County
Description
Upshur County legend of Mexican gold and silver coins hidden in Little Cypress Creek north of Gilmer after the 1839 Battle of the Neches near Tyler.
Historical Notes
During the Cherokee War of 1839, Mexico paid Cherokee factions to resist Anglo settlement in East Texas. After Texans defeated the Cherokee at the Battle of the Neches near present-day Tyler on July 15–16, 1839, retreating warriors scattered through Upshur County swamps along Little Cypress Creek. Legends of America and Texas Farm Bureau Insurance heritage articles describe Mexican agents offloading heavy coin purses into the creek mud to escape. Treasure hunters have searched the creek bed for generations; tales tell of empty vessels found without the bullion. Coordinates approximate Little Cypress Creek north of Gilmer in Upshur County northwest of Tyler.
