Lincolnville Pioneer Specie — Coryell County

Lost Treasure TX • Coryell County County
Description
Leon River legend of pioneer specie near Lincolnville — the Freedmen's community four miles west of Gatesville founded shortly after the Civil War.
Historical Notes
Lincolnville was on the Leon River four miles west of Gatesville in central Coryell County. Former slaves from Gatesville established the community shortly after the Civil War and named it for Abraham Lincoln. Early settlers included Jim and Lou Cook Mayberry, Gus Weatherly, and Green and Fannie Cook Brown. Residents organized Bethlehem Baptist Church on April 10, 1872. TSHA notes one group of former slaves settled in Lincolnville after the war; most stayed in Coryell County. Reconstruction-era folklore sometimes places family strongboxes and church specie in creek bottoms when freed communities built new institutions. The community was not shown on county highway maps by the 1940s.
