Lincoln Murphy Dolan House Strongbox — Lincoln County

Lost Treasure NM • Lincoln County County
Description
Lincoln legend of a Murphy and Dolan mercantile strongbox buried near the Lincoln County War courthouse — when "The House" monopolized trade across the largest county in New Mexico Territory.
Historical Notes
Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan's mercantile and banking operation dominated Lincoln County until John Tunstall and Alexander McSween opened a rival store in 1876, sparking the Lincoln County War. President Hayes called Lincoln's main street "the most dangerous street in America." Merchant-hoard folklore often places unrecovered specie where monopolists cached profits during the violent 1877–1878 feud. Billy the Kid's 1878 courthouse escape remains the town's best-known outlaw tale. Coordinates mark historic Lincoln in Lincoln County northeast of Roswell.
