Levelland Santa Fe Railroad Payroll — Hockley County

Lost Treasure TX • Hockley County County
Description
Levelland legend of a Santa Fe Railway payroll strongbox from the era when Hockley County became a cotton and railroad hub west of Lubbock.
Historical Notes
Hockley County organized in 1921 with Levelland as county seat after the Santa Fe Railway and cotton expansion opened the western South Plains. Railroad division payrolls and gin receipts moved substantial cash through depot towns. Rail-payroll folklore parallels Crosbyton and Plainview entries on the same South Plains corridor. Levelland later became known for the 1957 UFO sightings that drew national attention to the county. Coordinates mark downtown Levelland in Hockley County west of Lubbock.
