Leon River Ann Whitney Raid Pioneer Strongbox — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Hamilton County legend of a pioneer strongbox buried along the Leon River after the 1867 Indian raid on Ann Whitney's school — when frontier families hid specie from raiding parties.
Historical Notes
In 1867 Indians attacked a school on the Leon River in Hamilton County, killing teacher Ann Whitney and a neighboring farmer; several children were wounded or captured. The county had organized militia units during the Civil War era, and raids continued periodically until about 1875. Leon River bottomland folklore sometimes places settler specie buried in limestone bluffs and creek bends after frontier attacks. The Leon drains central Hamilton County before joining the Little River system downstream. Coordinates approximate the Leon River school-country east of Hamilton in Hamilton County. Respect private property along the river.
