Legend of the Money Trees

Lost Treasure LA • Allen Parish County
Description
No Man's Land folktale near Oberlin and Kinder of Jayhawker loot hidden and marked by "money trees" — part of the Myths and Legends Byway through the old Neutral Strip.
Historical Notes
Louisiana Life describes the Myths and Legends Byway through the Sabine Free State (Neutral Strip), where the Allen Parish Tourist Center in Oberlin tells the Legend of the Money Trees involving hidden Jayhawker plunder. Jayhawker gangs plundered the marsh and timber country during and after the Civil War. Folklore holds stolen payrolls and goods were cached and marked with carved or distinctive trees. The Neutral Strip (No Man's Land) between the Sabine and Calcasieu was lawless border country until the Adams-Onís Treaty — Lafitte associates and land pirates operated the same corridors.
