Lead Mountain Fort Gates Bullet Cache — Coryell County

Lost Treasure TX • Coryell County County
Description
Fort Gates legend of buried valuables near Lead Mountain — the rise behind abandoned cantonment ruins where frontier soldiers left countless lead bullets and target balls.
Historical Notes
TSHA records that after Fort Gates was abandoned in 1852, settlers continued to use the ruins as an Indian-raid refuge until buildings disintegrated, leaving only fireplace rock. Lead Mountain, back of the ruins, was so named because of the number of lead bullets found there. Treasure tradition sometimes conflates military lead scatter with hidden pay chests or sutler goods cached when the Eighth Infantry evacuated the post — the first of Gen. George Mercer Brooke's 1849 cordon forts to close. Coordinates mark the Fort Gates / Lead Mountain reach east of Gatesville on the Leon River. Respect private property near historic post sites.
