Last Chance Mine — Shafter District

Gold Mining Site TX • Presidio County County
Description
The Last Chance Mine in the Shafter Mining District intermittently shipped lead-silver ore with gold byproduct from 1910 through the 1920s in the Chinati Mountains.
Historical Notes
The Last Chance Mine in Section 14, Block 6, Galveston, Houston and San Antonio Railway Company Survey opened in 1910 and shipped small amounts of lead-silver ore that year and in 1915–1916. Harry Young reopened the mine about 1926 and shipped less than 30 tons before closing. TSHA classifies Last Chance among the district's smaller producers yielding under 100 tons of ore each. Gold values are byproduct only, recovered when ore reached El Paso-area smelters. Coordinates approximate the Last Chance Mine in the Shafter Mining District.
