Laredo Republic of the Rio Grande Specie — Webb County

Lost Treasure TX • Webb County County
Description
Laredo legend of unrecovered specie from the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande (1840) when Laredo served as the breakaway republic's capital on the border.
Historical Notes
The Republic of the Rio Grande was declared in January 1840 with Laredo as its capital. Federalist leaders sought independence from Mexico; the movement collapsed by November 1840, but Laredo remained a key Rio Grande trade city. Revolutionary-era folklore often places buried funds and customs receipts when short-lived governments fail. Texas Highways and border historians document the republic as one of Laredo's defining treasure-tale contexts. Coordinates mark downtown Laredo in Webb County on the Rio Grande.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
