Description
Laredo legend of Confederate specie or customs funds buried near Fort McIntosh — the Civil War post guarding the Rio Grande crossing at Laredo.
Historical Notes
Fort McIntosh was established in 1849 near Laredo to guard the Rio Grande crossing and the trade road to the interior of Mexico. Confederate forces held the post during the Civil War while cotton moved across the river to Matamoros. Border garrison folklore describes pay chests and contraband specie buried when commanders feared Union incursions from the Gulf or collapse of supply lines. Laredo Community College now occupies the fort site. Coordinates approximate Fort McIntosh in Laredo in Webb County.
