Lampasas River Indian Gold Mines

Lost Treasure TX • Bell County County
Description
Bell County legend of more than 100 prehistoric gold mines worked by Indians along the Lampasas River — one said to contain a large hidden cache of gold.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Bell County compilation cites guidebook lore that over one hundred Indian-worked gold mines "pepper the hill country" along the Lampasas River, with at least one mine containing a substantial cache. The Lampasas flows through Temple's western edge and continues toward Belton and the Three Forks country. Geologically the Blackland Prairie and Balcones Escarpment transition here; documented commercial gold production in Bell County is minimal, but the Indian-mine legend persists in treasure-hunting literature. Coordinates approximate the Lampasas River northwest of Temple. Respect private property along the river.
