Lake Vermilion French Traders Silver

Lost Treasure MN • St. Louis County County
Description
Early 1800s Lake Vermilion legend of French fur traders burying rich silver ore along the shores after discovering a mine they feared losing to rivals.
Historical Notes
French voyageurs ranged through northern Minnesota long before the 1865 Vermilion gold rush near Tower. Folklore says traders concealed raw silver near lake coves and forest margins before abandoning the district. The Vermilion gold rush and iron ranges later overshadowed the older silver-burial tradition in St. Louis County guides.
