Description
Anderson County legend of a farm or river-bottom strongbox now submerged beneath Lake Palestine on the Neches River southwest of Tyler.
Historical Notes
Lake Palestine was impounded in 1969 on the Neches River, flooding farms, ferry landings, and river-bottom structures between Anderson, Henderson, and Smith counties. Reservoir projects across Texas revived tales of caches lost under new shorelines. The Neches valley supported cotton plantations and homesteads before the dam. Folklore imagines pre-impoundment strongboxes still sitting below the lake bed near former river fords west of Tyler. Coordinates approximate mid–Lake Palestine on the Neches River in Anderson County.
