Sun shading (lidar)

Adjust simulated sun direction on the lidar hillshade. Azimuth = compass bearing of the light (0° north, 90° east). Altitude = height above the horizon (low = long shadows).

Historical map overlays

USGS scanned historical topographic maps. Enable an overlay and adjust its opacity. Works in 2D and 3D.

Lake Joyce Blackbeard Dig Site

Lost Treasure VA • Virginia Beach County
Description
Lake Joyce legend of repeated treasure digs on an island once part of the Lynnhaven River outlet — where hobbyists believed Blackbeard hid chests before fleeing warships.
Historical Notes
Virginia Places documents holes dug on a Lake Joyce island based on rumors linking Blackbeard to the old Lynnhaven outlet. Suburban development now covers much of the shoreline. Local writers argue a famous pirate would bury loot where only one captive knew the spot — not where an entire crew could return. Treasure hunting persisted anyway. ArcGIS mapping of Lake Joyce illustrates how shifting inlets complicate pinpointing colonial landing sites.
