Sun shading (lidar)

Adjust simulated sun direction on the lidar hillshade. Azimuth = compass bearing of the light (0° north, 90° east). Altitude = height above the horizon (low = long shadows).

Lafitte Brass Stake Cache — Kentucky Mott

Lost Treasure TX • Lavaca County County
Description
Lavaca County legend that Lafitte buried treasure a quarter-mile east of the Lavaca River, marked with a brass stake between Kentucky Mott and Mauldin Mott oak motts — stake found on a Hill ranch then lost.
Historical Notes
TreasureNet reports Lafitte used two tree motts — Kentucky Mott and Mauldin Mott — as compass landmarks for a cache buried about a quarter-mile east of the Lavaca River. A ranch hand on the Hill property reportedly pulled up a brass marker stake and never relocated the site. Oak mottes on the coastal prairie were standard navigation features before survey grids. Lavaca County ranch country between Hallettsville and the river remains largely private. Coordinates approximate the central Lavaca River valley east of Hallettsville. Distinct from the Lavaca River shipwreck legend near Edna.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
