Description
Interior Alaska legend of Forrest Hayden and partner Anatol discovering coarse grass-root placer on Kuskokwim tributaries in 1912 — Hayden vanished returning north and Anatol later appeared near Palmer with two leather bags of gold.
Historical Notes
After the Kantishna Friday Creek strike, prospectors Hayden and Hixon left with a half-Russian worker called Anatol to explore seventy miles north toward the Kuskokwim. Hayden staggered back to Kantishna with an infected foot, claimed fabulous creeks, then left alone for winter and was never seen again. Around 1914 Anatol reached Palmer on foot carrying two heavy bags of placer gold. The strike area was never thoroughly worked, leaving a classic lost-placer legend in one of Alaska's least prospected river systems.
