Katemcy Creek — Llano Uplift Placer Gold — Mason County

Gold Mining Site TX • Mason County County
Description
Northern Mason County creek community on FM 1222. Katemcy Creek drains granite uplands toward the Llano River — a documented topaz and heavy-mineral district where fine placer gold may concentrate in gravels.
Historical Notes
Katemcy is on Katemcy Creek and Farm Road 1222 a mile east of U.S. Highway 87 in northern Mason County (Texas Almanac: 30.912673° N, 99.253944° W). The town grew around sawmills, gristmills, and cotton gins on the creek in the 1880s. The Llano Uplift granite country around Katemcy, Streeter, and Grit produces Texas blue topaz in creek gravels and is noted for garnet, quartz, and feldspar. The same erosion liberates fine placer gold from Precambrian source rocks into tributary gravels feeding the Llano River system. Prospecting tips: Screen or pan heavy-mineral streaks in Katemcy Creek gravel after runoff. Almost all land is private ranch property — contact landowners or the Mason County Chamber of Commerce for access guidance.
