José Gasparilla Treasure — Charlotte Harbor

Lost Treasure FL • Charlotte / Lee County County
Description
Charlotte Harbor and Boca Grande legend of José Gaspar's four-century plunder — the folkloric "Gasparilla" pirate whose name anchors Tampa Bay's annual pirate festival.
Historical Notes
Tampa Bay folklore holds that José Gaspar (Gasparilla) preyed on Spanish shipping for decades from a Charlotte Harbor base. Historians note the Gaspar legend was largely popularized in the early 1900s, but it draws on real Gulf piracy eras. Gaspar allegedly kept captives on Captiva Island ("Isle de los Captivas") and amassed enormous loot before his 1821 confrontation with the USS Enterprise. Rather than surrender, legend says he chained himself and leaped overboard. Boca Grande Historical Society and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla preserve the tale that chests remain hidden along the harbor's barrier islands.
