Johnson City James Polk Johnson Ranch Trade Strongbox — Blanco County

Lost Treasure TX • Blanco County County
Description
Johnson City legend of a ranch-trade strongbox from the era when James Polk Johnson founded the town and won the 1890 county-seat election from Blanco.
Historical Notes
Settlers along the Pedernales River called for moving the Blanco County seat in 1876; James Polk Johnson donated land and built a hotel and office building. Johnson City became the county seat in 1890 after a hotly contested election against rival Blanco. County-seat and ranch-trade specie folklore often places emergency strongboxes along the Pedernales where remote stockmen handled cash before rural banking reached the Hill Country. Johnson City lies at the junction of US highways 281 and 290. Coordinates mark downtown Johnson City, the Blanco County seat in the central Pedernales country.
