Johnson Canyon Aztec Treasure

Lost Treasure UT • Kane County County
Description
Johnson Canyon legend of a fleeing Mexican politician burying Aztec weapons, jewels, and gold coins before dying with only a crude, indecipherable map — tied to Freddie Crystal's 1920s sealed-cave searches near Kanab.
Historical Notes
OldWest.org recounts an unnamed rich official who reached Johnson Canyon northeast of Kanab during the Mexican War of Independence and hid his collection before being shot on the return journey. Freddie Crystal arrived in 1914 claiming a treasure map and excavated sealed caves that proved empty, spawning theories of decoy chambers versus the real hoard. Best guesses place the cache between the Paria River and Black Rock Peak in the canyon country east of Kanab.
