Description
March 1877 Deadwood approach legend of the Sam Bass gang's fatal holdup on the road two miles from town — driver Johnny Slaughter was shot and treasure lore imagines passenger gold never recovered after the runaway stage was stopped.
Historical Notes
The Black Hills Bandits' fifth attack on the Deadwood Stage line turned deadly when outlaws killed Slaughter and spooked the team toward camp. The robbery was the gang's last stage job before abandoning coaches for the more lucrative Big Springs train robbery six months later. Coordinates mark the stage approach south of Deadwood where Black Hills bandit caches entered regional folklore.
