Description
Legend that 19th-century land pirate John Murrell and his Mystic Clan buried vast loot in present-day Vernon Parish in the old Neutral Strip.
Historical Notes
John Murrell (1806–1844) led the Mystic Clan of river pirates and horse thieves across Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana borderlands. Beauregard Parish folklore holds Murrell buried treasure in Vernon Parish piney woods. Murrell's famous hideouts column (SFASU Heritage Center) documents cave and swamp refuges along the Sabine corridor. Coordinates approximate central Vernon Parish in the No Man's Land country between Leesville and the Sabine River.
