Description
Merrimack legend of fur trader John Cromwell burying his trading fortune near his Penacook trading post on the west bank of the Merrimack River before fleeing to Massachusetts in the 1650s.
Historical Notes
John Cromwell traded with Penacook people near Merrimack in the 1650s until tribal retaliation forced him to flee. He reportedly buried his trading profits near the post before escaping to Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, where he died in 1661. The site near Cromwell Falls is now private brewery land; a town plaque marks Cromwell as Merrimack's first resident.
