Joaquin Murrieta Bandit Horde — Mother Lode

Lost Treasure CA • Merced County County
Description
Gold Rush legend of Joaquin Murrieta and the Five Joaquins burying stolen placer gold and strongbox loot in the Sierra foothills between Mariposa and Merced before California Rangers killed Murrieta in 1853.
Historical Notes
Joaquin Murrieta became California's most famous bandit of the early 1850s, robbing miners, merchants, and travelers in the Mother Lode country. Folklore holds that Murrieta and allied outlaws cached portions of their haul in caves and oak-shaded ravines so they could travel light between raids. Historians debate how much of the Murrieta saga is dime-novel embellishment, but treasure hunters still search the Merced–Mariposa corridor for unrecovered hoards tied to his name.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
