Description
Pirate Jean Lafitte based operations at Galveston Island (1817–1821) and is linked to numerous buried-chest and sunken-cache legends along the upper Texas coast and Galveston Bay.
Historical Notes
After the War of 1812 Lafitte established a colony called Campeche on Galveston Island, trading plundered goods until the U.S. Navy forced his departure in 1821. Texas folklore ties Lafitte to silver and gold caches from Matagorda Bay to the Sabine River — including the Hendricks Lake wagons legend. Galveston Bay stories describe chests buried on islands and plunder lost in shipwrecks among busy shipping channels. Texas Highways notes pirate caches at the bottom of boat-filled Galveston Bay waters. No Lafitte treasure has been authenticated by archaeology; most accounts are 19th-century newspaper and oral tradition.
