Gulf Coast legend that pirate Jean Lafitte buried chests of plunder near Fort Morgan on Mobile Point — where the privateer's smuggling routes met the entrance to Mobile Bay.
Historical Notes
Fort Morgan guards the tip of Mobile Point at the mouth of Mobile Bay. Digital Alabama and regional pirate lore associate Lafitte and his Barataria crews with hidden caches along the Alabama coast. Lafitte's operations spanned Barataria Bay, Galveston, and Gulf passes. Folklore places unrecovered gold and silver near the fort's dunes and bayou mouths before the 1814 U.S. raids scattered his men. Fort Morgan State Historic Site remains a focal point for Gulf Coast treasure tales alongside Dauphin Island and Bayou La Batre legends.
