Jean Lafitte Treasure — Contraband Bayou, Lake Charles

Lost Treasure LA • Calcasieu Parish County
Description
Southwest Louisiana legend that Jean Lafitte hid silver and gold in Contraband Bayou while traveling between New Orleans and Galveston — the namesake of Lake Charles's Louisiana Pirate Festival.
Historical Notes
Lake Charles Contraband Days (now Louisiana Pirate Festival) began in 1958 around the legend that Lafitte favored Contraband Bayou as a hideout while fleeing west toward Texas. Historian Adley Cormier and operative Arsene LeBleu family records place Lafitte active in the Sabine Free State / Neutral Strip between New Orleans and Galveston. In 1909 Joseph Choate swindled investors with a fake Lafitte cave map before prison. The Advocate (Curious Louisiana) notes rich oral tradition but no verified gold at Lake Charles — pirates typically spent loot rather than burying it. Coordinates mark Contraband Bayou near Lake Charles.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
