Jean Lafitte Treasure — Barataria Bay (Grande Terre Island)

Lost Treasure LA • Jefferson Parish County
Description
Legendary pirate cache country at Jean Lafitte's Barataria Bay stronghold on Grande Terre Island — where smugglers and privateers landed slaves and plunder before the 1814 U.S. raid destroyed the kingdom.
Historical Notes
Jean and Pierre Lafitte ran a blacksmith front in New Orleans before organizing Barataria smugglers circa 1810. Slaves landed on Grande Terre Island in Barataria Bay and moved through bayous to Mississippi River markets. Jean built a fort and resort houses on Grande Terre commanding up to 1,000 men and ten vessels. Commodore Patterson's 1814 expedition captured ten cruisers and $150,000 in property, scattering the Baratarians into the swamps. Folklore holds that Lafitte buried chests of gold and silver along the coast; American Cowboy and regional tradition claim up to twenty sea chests (some linked to Napoleon's wealth) hidden from Texas to Louisiana. Occasional coin finds keep the legend alive. Today Jean Lafitte National Historical Park preserves Barataria Preserve trails.
