James Waldrip Outlaw Gang Cache — Gillespie County

Lost Treasure TX • Gillespie County County
Description
Fredericksburg legend of outlaw loot tied to James P. Waldrip — the notorious gang leader shot beneath a live oak outside the Nimitz Hotel in 1867.
Historical Notes
During Reconstruction, outlaw James P. Waldrip terrorized Gillespie County until an unknown assassin shot him beneath a live oak tree outside Charles H. Nimitz's hotel in 1867. Confederate martial law and post-war banditry made the Hill Country a dangerous place for German Unionists and ranchers alike. Outlaw-gang cache tales cluster at county-seat trade towns along the Emigrant Road. The Nimitz Hotel survives as part of the National Museum of the Pacific War in downtown Fredericksburg. Coordinates mark the Nimitz Hotel block on Main Street in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County.
