James Copeland Gulf Coast Cache

Lost Treasure LA • Washington Parish County
Description
Legend from outlaw James Copeland's 1857 confession of $30,000 in gold buried near Mobile and reburied in Catahoula Swamp — treasure hunters still search Louisiana's Pearl River and Gulf marshes.
Historical Notes
James Copeland (1823–1857) led the Wages and Copeland Clan in hog theft, piracy, counterfeiting, and murder across southern Mississippi and Alabama. Before hanging, he detailed $30,000 in gold buried near Mobile and later moved to Catahoula Swamp in Hancock County, Mississippi. Rumors for decades describe unclaimed Copeland gold caches along Gulf shores including Louisiana's coastal parishes. Washington and St. Tammany parishes on the Pearl River corridor lie in the search zone between Mobile Bay and Honey Island swamp country.
