Outlaw James Copeland legend of a barrel of gold coins buried near Bayou La Batre — extension of the Gulf Coast pirate and river-bandit caches attributed to the Copeland gang.
Historical Notes
James Copeland (1823–1857) led the Wages and Copeland Clan in piracy, hog theft, and murder across southern Alabama and Mississippi. Before his hanging, Copeland confessed to Sheriff J.R.S. Pitts that the gang buried loot in barrels along the coast. Digital Alabama places one such barrel legend at Bayou La Batre near the Pirate Oak landmark. The tale connects Alabama's fishing village folklore to the broader Copeland $30,000 gold confession near Mobile and Catahoula Swamp.
