Historical Notes
Jacksonville was established as a Missouri Pacific Railroad town and remains the commercial center of Cherokee County south of Tyler. The county's rail corridor connected the Neches River basin to Dallas and the Gulf. Cherokee County developed around the 1839 removal of the Cherokee after the Battle of the Neches. Later railroad payroll folklore layered atop the older Mexican-payment gold traditions in the same river bottoms. Coordinates mark Jacksonville in Cherokee County south of Tyler.
