Irwinville Confederate Gold Trail

Lost Treasure GA • Irwin County County
Description
South Georgia legend along Jefferson Davis's flight path — captured near Irwinville May 10, 1865 with empty pockets while Confederate treasury wagons were scattered across Wilkes and Irwin counties.
Historical Notes
Jefferson Davis was captured by the Fourth Michigan Cavalry near Irwinville with only a few dollars on his person. The main Confederate treasury had traveled separately under Captain Parker. Historians debate how much gold was paid to troops, seized by Union forces, stolen at Chennault, or buried along the wagon route through south-central Georgia. The Jefferson Davis Historic Site at Irwinville marks the capture point; adjacent pine woods still generate metal-detecting stories of stray coin spills from the treasury train.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
