Indianola Ghost Town Caches

Lost Treasure TX • Calhoun County County
Description
Calhoun County legend of several caches of wealth hidden around Indianola — the vanished Gulf port destroyed by hurricanes after serving as a major nineteenth-century shipping center.
Historical Notes
Indianola rivaled Galveston as a deepwater port until the 1875 and 1886 hurricanes destroyed the town. Merchants, immigrants, and Confederate blockade traders moved enormous wealth through the Matagorda Bay harbor. The Rocker Box Calhoun County compilation describes multiple family and merchant caches buried around Indianola before storms or yellow fever emptied the waterfront. Metal detectorists search the ghost-town site and Matagorda Bay beaches after northers. Coordinates mark the Indianola historic site west of Port Lavaca. Much of the area is coastal ranch and bay shoreline.
