Indian Gap Highway 281 Outlaw Strongbox — Hamilton County

Lost Treasure TX • Hamilton County County
Description
Indian Gap legend of an outlaw strongbox buried near the US 281 crossing — a remote Hamilton County gap town on the Comanche frontier trail network.
Historical Notes
Indian Gap is a Hamilton County community on US Highway 281 in the south-central part of the county. The name recalls the frontier era when Comanche, Tonkawa, and other groups traveled through Central Texas and county settlers organized militia against raids into the 1870s. Highway-gap outlaw caches are staples of North Central Texas treasure tradition wherever stage and military roads crossed open range. Indian Gap lies between Hamilton and Evant on the 281 corridor. Coordinates mark Indian Gap in south-central Hamilton County.
