Independence Missouri Oregon Trail Jumping-Off Cache

Lost Treasure MO • Jackson County County
Description
Independence legend of emigrant strongboxes cached at the Queen City of the Trails — where the Great Migration of 1843 and hundreds of thousands of overlanders outfitted before the 2,170-mile trek west.
Historical Notes
Legends of America records Independence and Westport as the Oregon Trail's designated starting points after early parties departed from Elm Grove. On May 22, 1843, the Great Migration left Independence with up to 1,000 settlers, livestock, and wagons bound for the Willamette Valley. Trail folklore imagines merchants, ferrymen, and late-arriving emigrants burying specie and portable valuables when cholera, banditry, or wagon overload forced hasty departures from Missouri River outfitting towns. Coordinates mark downtown Independence, Jackson County — gateway to the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trail system. Urban area — legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
