Independence Creek Spanish Gold Cave — Terrell County

Lost Treasure TX • Terrell County County
Description
Terrell County legend of a cave near the mouth of Independence Creek where it joins the Pecos holding a large cache of Spanish gold — south of Fort Stockton in the lower Pecos canyon country.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Terrell County list describes a cave near the mouth of Independence Creek containing a large Spanish gold cache. Independence Creek flows clear through the western Edwards Plateau and enters the Pecos in one of Texas' most remote canyon reaches. Terrell County was organized in 1905; Sanderson is the county seat. Spanish entrada lore along the lower Pecos includes shipwreck bullion tales tied to inland salt trails. Independence Spring supported indigenous and later ranching settlements for millennia. Coordinates approximate the Independence Creek mouth at the Pecos River in southern Terrell County.
